Former White House national security adviser John Bolton has pleaded guilty in federal court to mishandling classified documents, marking a significant turn in one of the high-profile cases involving a former Trump administration official. The 77-year-old, who later became a vocal critic of Donald Trump, appeared in court on Friday and expressed remorse for his actions.
“I’m sorry for it,” Bolton told the judge during the hearing. Under a plea deal with prosecutors, he faces up to five years in prison, though the final sentence will be decided by the court. Bolton agreed to pay a substantial $2.25 million fine, complete up to 100 hours of community service, forfeit his government pension, and participate in a debriefing with intelligence and Justice Department officials.
The case centers on allegations that Bolton shared sensitive classified information with two relatives while working on his memoir. Prosecutors noted that the information included details from intelligence briefings and meetings with senior officials and foreign leaders. Bolton had initially pleaded not guilty to 18 criminal charges last year. Importantly, authorities confirmed that no classified material was actually published in his 2020 book, The Room Where It Happened, which sharply criticized Trump and contributed to their public feud.
The court has scheduled Bolton’s sentencing hearing for October. As part of the agreement, he must pay half the fine within five days of sentencing and the remaining balance within 90 days.

While Bolton’s case began before Trump’s return to office in 2025 and involved career prosecutors, it highlights the intense legal scrutiny faced by several Trump critics.
